Kittiwake Cottage
A vegan-friendly, recently renovated, self-catering holiday cottage for up to five people
plus a baby and/or a young child.
Kittiwake Cottage is a centuries-old, cosy cottage nestled down a quiet lane in Bempton village, East Yorkshire, one mile from Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve, where you can see, close-up, thousands of nesting seabirds with their chicks. The coastline around is stunning with rocky coves, caves and wide, sandy beaches all close by. At Flamborough you can watch seals hauled out on the beach to rest.
The nearby resorts of Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough are easily reached by train or car. Historic York and Hull are a day trip away.
A warm welcome awaits everyone at Kittiwake Cottage, vegans and non-vegans, but we ask that everyone staying there follows a plant-based lifestyle whilst in the cottage and its garden.
If you're a vegan you'll be pleased that we have tried to ensure that everything in the cottage is vegan-friendly, from furnishings to paint finishes, and we only use vegan cleaning products.
If you aren't a vegan at the moment but care about animals, want to help reduce climate change or want a healthier diet, come and try a vegan lifestyle whilst having a wonderful, relaxing holiday at Kittiwake Cottage. We'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have about changing to being vegan – we changed 40 years ago!

The use of candles, tealights, joss sticks, incense burners and oil burners.
Sorry but we do not allow pets in Kittiwake Cottage.
Please note: The cottage has some lower than normal and narrow doorways. Although the staircase is straight, not winding, it is narrow and quite steep. The downstairs accomodation may not be suitable for someone with mobility problems as there is a step between the lounge and kitchen-diner. The downstairs W.C. is off the dining area and the bath/shower is upstairs.
Parking
You can park outside the front door to unload and a small vehicle can remain parked there. As the lane is quite narrow we recommend that larger vehicles are parked on the road nearby or in the designated parking space at the top of our drive next door. Electric cars must not be charged at Kittiwake Cottage but there is an electric vehicle charging point at the Village Hall between Bempton and Buckton and many more in the local area.

The Local Area
Kittiwake Cottage is just one mile from the famous RSPB Bempton Cliffs seabird nature reserve which has a visitor centre, cafe and viewing platforms, some of which are wheelchair accessible. Bempton has a post office/store, a pub that serves some vegan meals and hosts live music and quiz nights, a hairdresser, an antiques/reclamation yard and a children’s playground. The adjoining village of Buckton has an artist’s studio/gallery and cafe. Bempton and Buckton Village Hall holds events and classes including yoga and has an electric vehicle charging point.
The Yorkshire coastline around Bempton is stunning with 400ft high chalk cliffs, caves, small coves, wide sandy beaches, rocky shorelines and traditional resorts, all within easy reach. Theatres, music venues, museums, art galleries and sports facilities are close by in Bridlington and Scarborough and a wider range is about an hour’s journey away in Hull and York.

Wildlife to See Throughout the Year
The cliffs from Bempton to Flamborough are nesting sites for thousands of seabirds throughout the spring and summer months - kittiwakes, guillemots, gannets, razorbills, fulmars and puffins. The area is on the migration route for summer and winter visiting birds. From autumn, throughout winter until early spring, winter-visiting waders can be seen on the beaches from the south side of Flamborough Head to Bridlington’s north and south beaches and harbour, as well as on Filey Brigg. Large flocks of pink-footed geese fly over Bempton in v-formations in October, calling to each other as they fly, sometimes landing to feed for awhile in the fields around. There is a colony of Tree sparrows at Bempton Cliffs.
House sparrows are thriving in the hedgerows close to Kittiwake Cottage and if you are lucky you may see the hedgehogs which live in the area. We try to garden to provide food and shelter for birds, insects and mammals.
Barn owls are regularly seen flying over the fields at Bempton Cliffs and sometimes short-eared owls.
Seals can be seen at Flamborough Head and often from Filey Brigg. There are an increasing number of sightings of dolphins and even whales, both from the cliff tops or by taking a boat trip on the Yorkshire Belle from Bridlington Harbour.
Other nature reserves to visit close by include Filey Dams and Tophill Low near Driffield.
Where to Eat Out
Visit Bridlington’s friendly vegan cafe at Planetwise in Bridlington, which is also a vegan store and yoga studio or enjoy a meal at the Nut and Nettle vegan restaurant in Bridlington’s Old Town. Many of the cafes in Bridlington offer vegan options as does The White Horse pub in Bempton. The cafe at the RSPB reserve also serves vegan drinks and cakes.
For full information, we recommend you check the HappyCow Website/App
